Myra's October November 2010 corner

Before I left for the states in early November, I had the joy of escorting my son Daniel down the aisle in his graduation ceremony. I am so proud of him. Next year he will be in the 7th grade. God is good. Thanks for praying for him this year. Don’t stop!
I had a wonderful time in the states sharing at supporting churches in Baltimore and Virginia.  I attended a mission’s conference at a new church, Christian Stronghold in Philadelphia, where I was encouraged and had opportunity to share about the ministry.
This year marks the end of the term of my board treasurer Raymond “Buster” Stewart. He has served long and well for over 20 years. I thank him and appreciate his hard and faithful service.
We will now be using   POB 270, Haymarket, VA 20168 as WMOTW support address. Anything sent to the old address will be forwarded for a limited time.
Please keep Pastor Dorsey of Pimlico Baptist church in your prayers. He had his leg amputated in December, I believe.  His church has been a great supporter of me and the ministry and I know Pastor Dorsey has a heart for missions. He and his church are a great example of what a small church with a big heart can do.
Thank you for your prayers, donations and love. Merry Christmas to all!
Love, Myra

October-November update

Myra left for the states in early November after a fun filled busy October.  School ended mid-October with three of our kids graduating from the 9th grade and one from the sixth grade.  Myra was unable to attend all of the graduations because she was preparing for her son Daniel’s graduation from elementary school.  We are all very proud of the new graduates and for all those who successfully completed the year.
We shut down the feeding program for the months of school vacation and gave out food twice a week with pastor Leonel sharing the word. The feeding program will begin again in mid – January when school resumes.
While Myra was gone the pastor continued with the preaching of the word on Sundays and during the week before the food give-away.  Gilma and another Sunday school teacher and mother, Andrea, also held a vacation Bible school.
Pre-natal vitamins were also given out to expectant mothers.

Pastor Leonel and wife Johana praying for graduates

Please pray for Ernestina and her family. Because of a family despute, she will not be moving into the new house when its completed. She is now staying with her sister and her health is improving slowly. Please pray for resolution of the family problem, for her husband Mundo and his drinking problem, and that Aracely (11) will continue to study next year. She sucessfully finished the 1st grade this year. The younger sister has not started school as yet.

                                          THE  LAND
We needed $10,000 to buy this piece of land for the comedor, church, multi-purpose library, Bible, computer, and English classes, medical and dental clinics. Pastor Leonel says he has a dream to have a seminary there also to teach and train pastors! So we believe God that this will come to pass. We now have $8,000.00 donated. Praise God!

The school shoes have been ordered and only $200 is due in January upon delivery

                                           Vacation Bible School
In November Gilma and Andrea held a vacation Bible School. Valdermar, Yolanda, Eduar, and Iris were their assistants. They had Bibles stories, made Christmas decorations and played games. The kids had a ball.

                           Food Giveaway
Since school closed mid-October, Pastor Leonel shares the word twice a week and then food is given to take home. On different days we may give out beans, rice, corn, oil, soap, vegetables, oranges and salt.  A local church donated 10 large 24 box containers of cereal! When school opens in mid-January we will return to our midday three day hot meal schedule.

September 2010 update

The month of September brought more rain and devastation to Guatemala with more bridges destroyed when the rivers crested. Communities were isolated, homes were destroyed and lives lost because of mudslides.
Not only was Myra’s 63rd birthday celebrated on the 2nd of September but also on the 15th of September was the celebration of Independence Day for Guatemala. This is a major holiday with parades almost every day for a week, special events in the schools, and carrying a torch from one place of significance to another.
Myra took photos of the school children who are involved in the ministry as they marched in their parades.
                             Casitas/Small Houses

The casitas have been delayed in being built because of the weather. This has been the worst weather in 60 years.. We’re looking toward the month of October to be a better weather month so the casitas can be finished.

Ernestina, Mundo and girls were given a water purifier and a barrel to capture rain water. Please pray for Ernestina’s health.

                                      Land and Projects
We needed $10,000 to buy this piece of land for the comedor, church, multi-purpose library, Bible, computer, and English classes, medical and dental clinics. Pastor Leonel says he has a dream to have a seminary there also to teach and train pastors! So we believe God that this will come to pass. We now have $5000.00 donated. Praise God!

School shoes for 2011 must be ordered by late October. We thank God for the $500 donation sent from Zion Church. We’re almost there! Only $1200 short.
Pastor Leonel’s Youth Group with kites

Julio (13) fell and broke his arm in three places and needed surgery. The cost was $300 including blood. His mother Graciela makes $80 a month and his dad was not working because of the bad weather. There are three other children at home. The hospital social worker said Julio would have to stay in the hospital until they came up with the money because there were no funds available to help their family.
Praise God for the generous donations from Park Valley Church of Va. and Art Hill. Julio had his operation and is doing great. See him below with friends after kite making.

Alicia broke her leg over a year ago. It was not set correctly.  Her husband pushed her again and more damage was done.  He pushed her the first  time  over a barrel after coming home drunk. She’s a fine Christian lady who has prayed for her alcoholic husband for years. She attends the church faithfully and we help her with meals since she has been unable to work. She made tortillas and sold them in the community.
Alicia has broken the crutches we lent her and has been using a stick to get around.  Lisa Malone sent her a walker.  Alicia is a happy camper now! Please remember her and her husband in your prayers.

August 2010 update

The month of August brought much rain and devastation to Guatemala with bridges destroyed when the rivers crested. Communities were isolated, homes were destroyed and lives lost because of the mudslides.  In our immediate area homes were flooded and destroyed and lives were lost. We are praying for relief but the prognosis is not good for the next few months. Please pray for the families that have lost everything especially for those who lost family members. The ministry continues….
Myra and pastor Leonel celebrated with students with excellent grades. We also included the older children who are part of the youth Discipleship class. We had pizza and a movie. It was a fun day.
We now have 102 students studying. The students attending elementary and higher grades finished the third quarter and all passed.
In the higher grades, we have one in 11th grade, one in 10th, three in 9th   grade and about to graduate, three in 8th grade and two in 7th grade.
We have two graduating from the sixth grade.
School ends in mid October. Please pray that they will all pass their final exams

                           Las Casitas/Little Houses
The second family that will be living in the little houses is Marielena and her 4 daughters 5-13. Marielena’s husband was killed two years ago. She has suffered with severe depression and has attempted suicide. She has not been able to adequately provide for her family. She has been attending Bible study and recently accepted Christ. She needs prayer to find a better job for her family. All of her girls are studying.
